The Jersey

This black Germany national team jersey was game-worn by point guard Pascal Roller during Germany’s qualification campaign for the 2003 FIBA European Championship. Although Roller appeared in six games during the qualifying stage, he was not part of Germany’s final roster for the tournament in Sweden. Manufactured by Nike, the jersey is professionally customized with Roller’s surname across the upper back and his national-team number “8” on both the front and reverse. The jersey features a lightweight black performance-fabric exterior with a contrasting white mesh interior. Gold trim surrounds the neckline, arm openings, side panels and lower hem. A white Nike Swoosh appears on the upper right chest, while the German federal eagle crest is positioned on the upper left. The “DiBa” sponsor logo is displayed prominently across the front and lower back. Subtle tonal graphics are incorporated into the black fabric. Roller’s autograph appears on the reverse number “8.” The white interior also carries a personalized inscription added by Roller during a later meeting with the collector in Hamburg: “Für Christian – Game Used!” followed by his signature. The jersey is supported by documented auction provenance, archived correspondence concerning its authenticity and direct personal confirmation from Roller. Together, these elements establish its use by Roller as part of Germany’s EuroBasket 2003 qualification campaign.
Historical Documentation

Story & Historical Context

Germany’s qualification campaign for the 2003 FIBA European Championship followed the national team’s historic bronze-medal performance at the 2002 FIBA World Championship. Competing against Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Ireland and Cyprus, Germany finished first in its qualifying group with nine victories from ten games and secured its place at the final tournament in Sweden. Pascal Roller appeared in six games during this qualification campaign, averaging 10.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. Although he contributed to Germany’s successful qualification, Roller was not selected for the final 12-player roster that competed in Sweden in September 2003. The jersey is therefore associated with Germany’s EuroBasket 2003 qualification campaign rather than the final tournament itself. Known for his quickness, perimeter shooting and leadership, Roller became one of the most recognizable German guards of his generation. He represented Germany in 122 senior international games and later played an important role in the national team’s silver-medal finish at EuroBasket 2005. His club career was closely associated with the Frankfurt Skyliners, with whom he won the German Cup in 2000 and the German championship in 2004. He was also named German League MVP for the 2003–04 season. The jersey was acquired by the collector through an eBay charity auction benefiting a children’s charity. The original purchase documentation remains preserved, together with archived correspondence conducted through the eBay platform concerning the jersey’s origin and authenticity. During a later personal meeting in Hamburg, Roller directly confirmed the jersey as game-used and added the personalized inscription “Für Christian – Game Used!” followed by his signature to its white interior. While the jersey was originally connected to the 2003 European Championship campaign, subsequent historical research established the more precise attribution to Germany’s qualification campaign for EuroBasket 2003.
